Boy, did they find one!
In the early 1960's Quaker Oats developed a character who not only appealed to kids, but would be a spokesperson for years to come. Cap'n Crunch epitomized the happy-go-lucky seafarer with not a worry in the world. Just as the first batches of Cap'n Crunch hit the high seas in 1963, the S.S. Guppy was launched courtesy of Jay Ward Animation in Hollywood. Jay Ward Productions has produced some of the worlds most famous characters including Rocky and Bullwinkle, Boris and Natasha, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman.
Cap'n Crunch, canine first-mate Seadog and a crew of four kids had to always think fast to keep the Guppy's crunchy cargo out of the hands of the scheming yet bumbling pirate Jean La Foote. Cap'n Crunch outsold 55 other competitors within a year and had fan clubs all over the country. It's went international being called Capitaine Crouche in French-speaking Canada and Kaptajn in Scandinavia.
Here we see the Cap'n as a plush doll with a felt uniform and facial features. His black button eyes are glued on, and his ocean-blue uniform is trimmed in gold piping.
